Focus: The Walls Vineyards
The Walls Vineyards was founded by software attorney Mike Martin and winemaker Ali Mayfield. The wines are being made at the Artifex winemaking facility in Walla Walla, but will be moving to the old Whitman Cellars winery in the near future. A tasting room is planned which will be located next to the Passatempo Restaurant downtown. These wines are an auspicious debut for the winery.
Each wine reviewed received a score of 19/20, signifying an outstanding wine with much complexity:
- 2013 Stanley Groovy -Red Blend
- 2013 La Lutte - Chardonnay
- 2014 La Lutte - Chardonnay
- 2014 McAndrew - Chardonnay
Best Buys for Summer: 2015 Cruel Summer – Rosé of Pinot Noir
The wine’s name refers to the hot “cruel” summer of 2015. Here, the grapes were picked at just the right time, resulting in a light pink-copper color and a lovely nose of strawberries, Rainier cherries, pink peach and tangerine with scents of cherry blossoms, pink lilac and white incense. The flavors are nicely fruited and moderately extracted, with notes of peach and cherry pits, tangerine peel and volcanic Columbia Gorge minerals, followed by a deliciously silky, yet well delineated finish. 18.5/20 points
Whitman Cellars Sells, Again: Winery deal part of a larger investment in the Walla Walla industry

Walla Walla, Wash.—The former premises of Whitman Cellars has once again sold, this time to a fledgling winery whose owners are making significant investments in the Walla Walla Valley. Michael Martin, a lawyer with Microsoft Corp., has teamed up with veteran Walla Walla winemaker Ali Mayfield to launch The Walls, a venture that has grown to include vineyards, a winery and a restaurant. “We’re doing our best to respect the past but also to create this really new, interesting future for everybody to enjoy,” Martin told Wine & Vines.

The Walls 2014 Les Jeunes Vignes Chardonnay - This new winery from Walla Walla has been very buzzy through word of mouth regarding to their inaugural tastings. They were pouring a few Chardonnays at Taste Washington and all were fun and exciting with the 2014 Les Jeunes Vignes being my standout with its nuanced flavor profile. Look forward to seeing what else this winery has up their sleeve.

Reimaging the Pastime: Passtempo Taverna will resurrect and update many of the popular aspects of the former restaurant.

It is the Pastime with a twist.
Even the name says as much. Passatempo Taverna.
What served for decades as a reflection of Walla Walla’s Italian heritage and a trusted spot for dinner or just drinks in an era when Walla Walla was known for only wheat is re-imagined — this time with collaboration from a well-known mixologist, one of Washington’s well known Italian restaurateurs and paired with a brand new companion winery being built in the empty lot next door.
Actually, the winery was the original concept. The remake of the historic restaurant came after. More on that later.

Spring Release, May 7, 2016
It was wonderful to spend time with so many of you at our Spring Release event at our production facility – we had such a great time eating, drinking and enjoying the beautiful day with everyone who joined us. And we couldn’t have done it without the Passatempo Taverna crew who kept us all well fed with delicious homemade pasta, grilled pork and fresh focaccia!
