While the inaugural 2014 Concrete Mama Syrah boasted of ripe fruit and hearty meats, the 2015 pushes it even further...denser, darker and more direct. Our Assistant Winemaker, Peter, calls it, “the wine people at the party flock to.” Co-fermented with Grenache, also from The Rocks of Milton-Freewater, this wine delivers a true sense of place. “You have to try not to break your ankles simply walking there, it’s so hard, so unique,” says Peter. The team agrees that Ali’s style does not capitalize on the “funk” specific to The Rocks District but incorporates it, finding the footing to make truly beautiful wine from a difficult place. “The secret to the Rocks District is that fermenting its fruit in concrete gives more control,” adds Ali. “You get a slower, longer fermentation so you can extract more out of the fruit. If you let it go native it will ferment in just a few days. We really had to keep our eyes on this one or it would have gone a little crazy.” Crazy beautiful wine...that’s what we’re bringing to this party.
Because this wine brings a little bit of everything -- black olive, smoked meats, mint, blackberry -- to the table, it would be great to drink with...a bit of everything! Or, if you must focus, we most definitely enjoy it with smoked pork topped with salsa verde or even a spicy herb salad with mint, thyme, arugula simply dressed with olive oil, salt and pepper.
