2016 The Ramparts

THE STORY

Ramparts are defensive walls built to protect something of great value. In this case, the walls are glass and the treasure, a classic Chateauneuf du Papes varietal blend, composed of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Counoise and Viognier. This Red Moutain AVA fruit comes from Red Heaven Vineyard and was carefully sorted and fermented in concrete.

VINTAGE NOTES

We also aged this vintage in concrete, which shaped it into a very pure expression of all its different pieces, while also adding an elegant minerality. We find that the wine is balanced, with massive complexity and freshness.

We think this will be a beautiful wine to drink in the Fall, as the weather starts to get a bit cooler. Nice tannins, classic notes of tea leaves and cherry mean Ramparts would pair nicely with rich dishes such as Beouf Bourguignon, seasoned lamb or even bouillabaisse.

PURCHASE

“The Walls have crafted another great wine with their 2016 ‘The Ramparts’ release. On the nose, this takes on nice range, from red fruits to orange rind to smoky tones. The palate shows nice high toned citrus and delicate red fruit overtones from the large percentage of Grenache and touch of Viognier. Lithe and downright sexy, this elegant Rhone style wine is drinking marvelously right now. Drink 2018-2028 - 92 points”
